I only saw Chief Schirling in action once. He was clearing out a homeless encampment on Appletree Point Road. The kindness and compassion he showed three drunken men sprawled in the green space by the road was remarkable. He was firm about removing them, but understand that their belongings were all they had in the world, he handled their things carefully, placing them in the trunk of the police car in an orderly and respectful way. Another officer eased the men gently into the cruiser, patiently explaining what was happening in a caring, calm and non-judgemental way.
A recent experience with Chief Lasker was when he reassured my neighbors that a proposed training burn of a house in our neighborhood would be safe and non-polluting. His staff called us several weeks before to answer questions, and gave us notice of the days and times of training exercises.
